WineIt’s not always easy sourcing a good vegan wine, so we’ve compiled this list as a useful starting point. If you’re not quite sure what vegan wine entails, then view our previous article for further information about vegan wines. In our opinion, one step better than vegan wine is organic vegan wine, so we have also highlighted those for you to peruse.

Stock may change, so it’s best if you check directly with the supplier to confirm it is vegan. Let us know if we need to update the list or you have suggestions, particularly if you find any vegan New Zealand Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Before you dive into our fantastic list of vegan wines, we would like to briefly address biodynamic and organic farming methods in the production of wines in New Zealand.  There’s a grey area on how each winery determines if their wine is vegan. A lot of wineries say their wines are vegan if they use non-animal derived “fining agents”, but there can be other factors to consider.

Organic wines are made from certified organically grown grapes with the need to avoid any synthetic chemicals or additives in the process. These wineries are typically certified by organisations such as BioGro NZ. Biodynamic wine is produced from grapes grown using biodynamic farming principles. This is when the entire vineyard is seen as a complete ecosystem where all of its parts and processes work together with little intervention from external sources.

For those in the vegan community, it is of note that the addition of organic fertilisers to soils (in both organic and biodynamic vineyards) could contain non-vegan elements such as animal dung, and composted plant materials made from insects and microorganisms.

If you need more information about the production of a particular wine, then you are best to contact the winery directly.
