The fried egg is a classic, a must-have for empty fridges and lazy days. But it’s not just a fallback solution when you’re out of ideas. It’s so much more than that.
How to Make a Fried Egg Like a Chef
Oil or butter for fried egg?
Even though preparing a fried egg requires little technique, it’s always good to remember the basics. To prepare a classic fried egg, only three essential elements are enough: a pan, a fat and a whole egg. Be careful, if you opt for cooking with butter, it is better to do half butter and half oil to enjoy its great taste while reducing saturated fats.
Is fried egg cooked on low or high heat?
The most important thing to remember about cooking a fried egg is that the pan must be very hot before adding the egg. If you want a nicely grilled (or even fried) egg, in this case, you will be rather generous with the fat and heat it over high heat before adding the egg. This way, the egg will be “seared” from the first moments and will promise a nice grilled layer when eaten. You can then reduce the heat to finish cooking. In any case, as a general rule, a fried egg is never cooked over low heat. It cooks quickly, about 1 to 2 minutes, and it is the temperature difference between the pan and the egg that allows it to sear instantly.
How do you know if a fried egg is cooked?
No pressure with the fried egg, once the white is seized, and the yolk is still shiny, remove the pan from the heat, and remove it from the pan (otherwise it will continue to cook). But be careful not to overcook! There is nothing more disappointing than a fried egg whose yolk has been seized (and has become dull) and has turned into a hard-boiled egg. If in doubt, it is better to slightly undercook the egg, than to overcook it.
Cook a fried egg in advance
Cooking a fried egg is so quick that there is little point in preparing it in advance. It is better to cook it at the last minute for optimal tasting. Anticipating is good, enjoying it is better!
How to accompany a fried egg?
Purists know that nothing beats a fried egg garnished with fleur de sel, and served with good fresh bread, or even a little butter. But it can also be accompanied by a good number of ingredients. Fabulous on a croque madame, divine with savory spinach pancakes, perfect with sautéed mushrooms, refreshing with herbs, neoclassical on avocado toast, the fried egg is a blank canvas with which everyone can feel like an artist.
The proof is in these 18 fried egg recipes picked from Pinterest which prove, once again, that you don’t need much to enjoy yourself.
