Logosynthesis: healing past wounds with words

Logosynthesis is a therapeutic practice based on the power of words to overcome daily blockages and fears. Discover this method with the advice of its creator, Dr Willem Lammers, psychologist and author of the book Logosynthesis, words to heal.

Sometimes, seemingly minor situations, often experienced in childhood – an inattentive parent, poor relationships with classmates – leave lasting traces. In adulthood, they can resurface in the form of blockages: fear of being abandoned by your partner, fear of failing at your job, etc. “Even the best parents are sometimes overwhelmed by the difficulty of reconciling the needs of their child, their own desires and their economic constraints”recognizes Willem Lammers.

In the most severe cases, these experiences can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), caused by traumatic events: bereavements, accidents, attacks, humiliations… So many situations which can impact the well-being of the individual, years or even decades later. In France, it is estimated that between 6 and 9% of the population will experience this disorder in their life; Women are twice as likely to develop PTSD as men after a traumatic event (1).

It is to help all these people that Willem Lammers developed logosynthesis.

What is logosynthesis?

Logosynthesis aims to free oneself from unconscious blockages by stating liberating sentences: it relies on the power of words, “without our having to consciously think or direct our intentions”explains Willem Lammers. Another aspect of logosynthesis is that it is part of a spiritual vision of the individual. “ For Logosynthesis, we are more than just a physical body striving to survive on Earth and pass on our genes, said Willem Lammers. We are more than nature and nurture: we are Essence, a Higher Self that transcends life on Earth. But, often, we are not aware of this Essence. Many of us have lost all contact with her. »

Logosynthesis can be practiced with a therapist or on your own, through “self-coaching”. A session includes several steps: identify your blockage and its source, pronounce liberating sentences with pauses between each sentence and reassess the situation to practice again (see Tony’s session at the end of the article).

What the science says

A few recent small studies have been carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of logosynthesis.

For example, in the Philippines in 2022, a study included four adults who had negative childhood experiences. They followed three to six weekly logosynthesis sessions, followed by several months of follow-up. The results suggest that logosynthesis is an effective way to reduce PTSD symptoms and distress (2).

Another pilot study in Switzerland had mixed results. However, it suggests a positive effect on people with mental disorders and indicates a potential for clinical application (3).

Logosynthesis in practice: the case of Tony

In his book, Willem Lammers gives many examples of people who have managed to free themselves from blockages thanks to his method. Let’s see, for example, how he proceeded with Tony, a young 30-year-old executive, who has to make an important presentation in his company. But as the date approaches, he experiences a night of anxiety and has nightmares: members of management throw eggs and tomatoes at him and some are former classmates.

In the session with Willem Lammers, this is what happened.

  • First, Willem Lammers asks him to imagine that he is giving his presentation and how he feels. Tony is very anxious, he imagines that his management is making fun of him.
  • Willem Lammers asks him to say the following sentence: “I recover all my energy linked to the representation of this imaginary scene with my direction and I put it back in its rightful place within Me. »
  • Tony pauses to let the words sink in, then he has to say the second sentence: “I eliminate from all my cells, from my body and from my personal space, all the energy that does not belong to me and which is linked to this imaginary scene with my direction, and I return it to its rightful place. »
  • After another pause, he said the third sentence: “I recover all my energy linked to all my reactions to this imaginary representation of a scene with my direction and I put it back in its rightful place within Me. »
  • At this moment, Tony visualizes a scene from his childhood with one of his teachers and the class making fun of him. Willem Lammers asks him to say new sentences to free himself from his memory of feeling humiliated. Tony feels better, fearless, calm. And his presentation with his management will be a success.
