Each food finds its natural place in our refrigerator and the bottle of milk is no exception to this rule. Most people actually store milk in the refrigerator door. After all, what could be more obvious? The brick or bottle fits perfectly into the shelf provided for this purpose and allows the bottle to be kept vertically, thus avoiding any risk of overturning. However, according to The Independent* newspaper, this choice would not be the best, on the contrary, to preserve the quality of your milk.
Avoid the refrigerator door at all costs
The door is the least cold part of the refrigerator. Indeed, each time it is opened, it is exposed to the ambient air and therefore to temperature variations which accelerate the proliferation of bacteria, but above all reduce the shelf life of the products stored there… like your bottle of milk. “Food stored in door shelves is likely to expire more quickly,” says Salah Sun, head of product management at Beko, a company specializing in kitchen appliances. If the ideal for storing sensitive products is a constant temperature around 4°C, this condition is absolutely not guaranteed in the door.
Organize your refrigerator well
The different compartments of the refrigerator are not designed randomly. Each zone has a specific temperature and function: the lower level, the coldest, is ideal for raw meats and fish. Fruits and vegetables – be careful, some should not be kept refrigerated – maintain their freshness and nutrients in the vegetable drawer, at a controlled humidity level. As for the middle one, it is intended to accommodate dairy products, milk, yogurts, cheeses, because it benefits from a constant and moderate temperature. “Optimal storage conditions help your fresh produce last longer, which reduces your waste, but also the frequency of your purchases. You will be able to reduce your shopping budget” adds Salah Sun. A tidy refrigerator not only keeps food fresh, but also helps avoid food waste and unnecessary expenses.
