Between inflation playing on our nerves more than ever, the weather turning gray, and the wave of runny noses, it’s certain, October is here! But there is no question of letting yourself be defeated. We want to eat well, and above all control our budget.
How to control your food budget?
First of all, let’s put the church back in the middle of the village. As a consumer, there are actions over which we can act – the choice of food we buy – and other points over which we have no control, such as inflation.
Once we have written this, we can focus on the aspects that will affect the final invoice. Of course, we are talking about the choice of ingredients. Let’s talk little, talk well, we know it, you know it, everyone knows it: to save money and respect your food budget, you have to cook. Implied, do not choose expensively prepared dishes which may be disappointing when tasted. Especially if we focus on the quantity… Sometimes, when opening a tray, we are a little disappointed by the tiny quantity of dish in sauce present, which is out of place in comparison to the sublime dish displayed in the photo of the tray.
It is imperative to look at the price per kilo
The first and most important reflex to have when shopping is this: you have to look at the prices per kilo. Those who have acquired this reflex would not imagine doing it any other way, but for those who have never done it, the mechanism can be more difficult to engage.
Why should we look at prices per kilo? The price per kilo is the only reference on which we can easily base ourselves. All labels, whether they concern fruits, vegetables, biscuits, honey, spreads, or even oilseeds, indicate a price per kilo, much more revealing than the price per unit.
For what ? Because a packaged product (in a box, bag, can) displays a price, but we still need to compare the packaging. Between 100g chocolate bars, those at 90g or even 80g, looking at the unit prices is not a sufficient indication to know which chocolate is the most expensive. While the price per kilo, displayed in all cases, will tell the truth without any marketing promise!
As soon as we start looking at the prices per kilo, we realize that raw products are preferable from a budgetary point of view but also and above all for cooking! Indeed, to save money, cooking in the kitchen is an excellent solution. In addition, this allows you to cook large quantities of family and economical recipes that last for several meals such as gratins, soups, or even stews.
And if we think about our weekly menus in advance, it’s even more beneficial! Thus, we buy the right quantities to avoid losses and we do not make unnecessary purchases (while remembering to check our stocks in our cupboards before leaving).
What recipe to cook in October?
This month, we are highlighting October fruits and vegetables such as squash (pumpkin and butternut at the top of the list), mushrooms, chestnuts, but also walnuts and hazelnuts. So many comforting flavors that are accompanied by autumn spices, or even coffee or chocolate for dessert. If cinnamon is inseparable from autumn, to be used to flavor pies, cakes, compotes, biscuits, or even drinks, ginger is also a perfect ally for cold days. In addition to giving us a boost, it is perfect for relieving sore throats thanks to its antiviral and antibacterial properties.
So many flavors available in these 30 fall dishes.
