To give your bank account time to recover from the holidays, focus on inexpensive back-to-school recipes.
“The grasshopper having spent all summer, found itself very destitute when the start of the school year came…” Between renting accommodation, activities and for some, buying school supplies, the credit card often looks grey when returning from vacation. So, in order to approach this month of September with peace of mind, we choose seasonal recipes at low prices that will help us control our food budget.
How to eat cheaply at the start of the school year?
Seasonal products galore
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, the month of the new school year is a time of transition. We enjoy the last of the summer produce, while the flavors of early fall gradually creep into our menus. Tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, and melons are therefore still around for a few weeks, to be slipped into back-to-school salads without hesitation. And if you were starting to miss mushrooms, leeks, and apples, good news, they are finally back. Added to this are late summer fruits like figs and plums, which are definitely the stars of the moment.
So, September is surely the month that offers one of the greatest varieties of plants that it would be a shame to deprive yourself of. Not only are they sold at affordable prices, but they also allow you to stock up on vitamins and energy. And you will need energy to face this often intense recovery period.
Starchy foods at every meal
When it comes to energy, we think about including a portion of starchy foods in each of our menus. Rice, pasta, semolina, quinoa, potatoes… All sources are good to take. If possible, choose whole grains instead. Rich in fiber, they are among the best foods for eating healthily without breaking the bank.
Cheap proteins
The last essential element for a balanced plate is protein. But since we’re trying to watch our spending, we forget about the overpriced beef ribs and racks of lamb. Instead, we opt for more economical proteins like chicken, pork, eggs, but also canned fish for lovers of seafood flavors. Not to mention legumes like chickpeas, lentils and dried beans, which are an excellent vegetarian alternative to meat products.
Finally, we don’t hesitate to indulge in a little comfort with cheese, which we slip into any dish, and chocolate desserts, to round off the menu in style.
