Here's a simple trick to keep jam from going moldy

Although sugar acts as a natural preservative by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, jams still end up going moldy due to exposure to air or moisture introduced by previously used utensils. To keep them longer and prevent mold from forming, it is therefore advisable to follow a few rules.

How to store jam properly

If you are making homemade jam, it is crucial to sterilize the jars before filling them. To do this, immerse the jars and lids in boiling water for 10 minutes, then let them air dry. Once the jars are filled with jam, seal them immediately and store your unopened jam jars in a cool, dry place, away from direct light. A cupboard or cellar at room temperature works well.

Getting rid of mold

Even with these tips, it’s still worth checking your jam regularly. If you notice signs of mold, and it’s limited to a small area on the surface, carefully remove the moldy part with a clean spoon. You can dig a little below the visible layer, as some filaments are sometimes not visible to the naked eye. Once the moldy part is removed, a simple trick will help keep it longer. Simply sprinkle a thin layer of powdered sugar over the remaining surface of the jam. The sugar acts as a natural preservative by absorbing moisture and creating a barrier that prevents mold from reforming. To prevent mold from recurring, consider sterilizing the jar lid. Wash it in boiling water, then let it dry completely before replacing it on the jar. This step removes any mold spores that may still be present on the lid.

By following these tips, you will be able to enjoy your jams for a long time while maintaining their taste and quality.
