No time to cook or go shopping? We have the solution.
How to make an impromptu fall menu?
Closet products, kings of improvisation
Dried vegetables, canned tuna and grocery products… All these foods have the advantage of being kept for a long time in the cupboards. As a result, we even tend to forget them. However, they can save the day when we are trying to prepare a menu quickly. Transforming a can of lentils into a quick, family meal is child’s play. As for the magic quartet of flour, sugar, egg, butter, ingredients that we almost always have on hand, they will allow you to make many savory and sweet recipes.
Make do with the means at hand
Have you spotted a great recipe but don’t have all the necessary ingredients? Try replacing them with equivalent foods. For example, instead of pasta, use noodles or another starch. Same for fruits, vegetables, and protein sources. Salads, fried vegetables or soups can be made with any seasonal product.
Same tips for desserts. Making an eggless cake with ripe bananas is child’s play. Same for butter, replaceable with oil, compote, oilseed puree or yogurt. Certain vegetables, including squash and beets, are also practical for baking in the event of a shortage of butter and sugar,
Your improvised fall menu
Small peculiarity of this menu, you have to start preparing the dessert, then the main course. The starter will finally come last to save time on cooking
This impromptu meal starts with a fall vegetable salad. Apart from cutting the vegetables and making the vinaigrette, you will just have to roast some pumpkin seeds and that’s it. Salad is one of the most practical starters to make when you’re in a hurry. Of course, the recipe is easily adaptable with different vegetables. Apart from the squash and kohlrabi used, you can opt for carrots, cauliflower florets or endive.
As a main course, we chose simplicity: a Toulouse sausage accompanied by coral lentils and caramelized shallots. Filling and easy, it’s a perfect recipe for the season.
It is noted that the sausage must cook in the oven for 30 minutes, but it can also be cooked for 10 to 15 minutes in the pan.
And for dessert ? Impossible to finish this improvised menu without a sweet touch. For this, we have chosen a recipe that is both classic and seasonal, apple crumble. Available with any fruit in your basket, all you need is butter (or oil if you learned the lesson above), sugar and flour to work wonders. Add to that a few hazelnuts, spices or chocolate chips, and you have a delicious dessert, ready in no time.
