A timeless classic of any bistro in France and Navarre, the croque-monsieur can also be dressed in winter. The proof.
Crunch essentials
What is croque-monsieur? Generous bread, topped with ham, cheese, and béchamel for the classic version. From this base, everything is possible. Seed, wholemeal, buckwheat or spelled bread; bacon, raw ham, bresaola; Comté, cheddar, brie, camembert; and béchamel flavored with garlic or spices, can be included in the recipe.
As there are few ingredients in this recipe, you have to choose quality products that taste good. For example, long-aged cheeses and cured meats are a good choice.
Winter flavors on the menu
How to transform your simple croque monsieur into a seasonal delicacy? By integrating flavors that evoke winter. Obviously, all mountain cheeses are a winning option like Comté, Beaufort, Raclette, Abondance, Gruyère, Reblochon, Munster Géromé, or even Saint-Nectaire. Camembert also with its flowery rind and its unmistakable milky taste, will fit perfectly into a winter croque-monsieur. To make our plate travel, we can also rely on feta, which is more original.
To spice up the cheese, we think of baby spinach, pickled carrots, or white radishes, which temper the fatty side of the latter.
You can also replace the cold meats with omelette, or black truffle, for a luxury croque. If you have time on your hands, why not prepare pulled pork to replace the classic white ham? It obviously takes more time, but we are thinking outside the box.
A gluten-free sandwich
Also, for maximum originality in keeping with the season, why not skip the bread completely in favor of cauliflower? Yes, blended cauliflower, mixed with eggs, parsley, starch and Provence herbs, to cook in the oven before garnishing with ham and grated Emmental cheese. A perfect recipe to make the most reluctant among us appreciate cauliflower, all gluten-free.
Among the original uses of vegetables, we cannot ignore butternut squash which, well prepared, replaces divine cheddar for a vegan and lactose-free option.
Last but not least, we always mention “sir” when we talk about croque, but nothing stops you from adding a fried egg to your creation! One of the many ways to cook eggs, ideal for all fans of the genre.
