September is a pivotal month in the year. Between the end of the holidays, the start of the school year, and the various activities, a good diet is essential to tackle everything head on.
Fruits and vegetables of the month
September bridges the gap between the end of summer produce and the beginning of autumn flavours. In September, on the vegetable side, we can still enjoy cucumbers, artichokes, peppers, green beans, eggplants, tomatoes, zucchini, but also small fresh shoots such as lettuce, purslane, watercress, spinach and aromatic herbs.
For fruits, melon, grapes, mirabelles, blueberries, redcurrants, figs, raspberries, plums, blackberries, will brighten up our menus all month long. While some are at the end of the season, others are just starting it. We also note the return of apples, pears and also hazelnuts which announce the arrival of autumn dessert recipes.
Also, September is the month with the highest fruit and vegetable yields. So we take advantage of it to stock up and prepare for the colder days. Homemade jams; tomato coulis; ratatouille to freeze, remember that your freezer is a friend who wants the best for you, so we take advantage of it to cook summer flavors that we can bring out in the middle of winter.
Back to school with a bang
In September, the main event remains the start of the school year. Whether it is at the beginning of the month for young and old pupils, employees, or later for students, this month marks the beginning of a new cycle, which goes hand in hand with desires for renewal in the decoration or the cupboards. But it is also the right time to start or resume a sporting, artistic, or cultural activity.
For all this, but also to get off to a good start after the often frequent excesses of summer, we rely on a balanced diet. Thus, in addition to logically doing good to your body, the right intake also allows you to perform better at different levels. Omega 3 from oily fish and flax, rapeseed, and walnut oils, for example, contribute to the proper functioning of the brain, but also of memory, which will be heavily used with the start of classes for some. Proteins strengthen immunity and provide energy, essential in the context of a sporting activity, just like carbohydrates, essential fuel for the body which acts on different levels, as much at the level of the muscles, the brain, the heart, as of the red blood cells.
Eating a balanced diet means eating a little bit of everything, but above all diversifying your intake to be sure not to suffer from any deficiency at any level.
Recipes for the whole month
In September, you can still enjoy original salads, full of vitamins; no-cook dishes when the temperature gets too high; or delicious ice creams to cool off.
Also, inexpensive back-to-school recipes appear to be the ideal option for controlling your budget while still enjoying yourself, just like economical family recipes, with generous quantities of dishes to share. It is well known that it is better to cook a dish in large quantities that will last several days, than to buy each ingredient in small quantities for a given recipe.
Similarly, anticipating the week’s menus allows you to both manage future expenses and organize meals according to planned activities and outings. Indeed, in September, music, singing and sports classes start again, and the hours allocated to cooking are reduced. Anticipating is the key to no longer stressing!
