Native to tropical regions of Asia and South America, coconut milk is extracted from the pulp of fresh coconuts, giving it its characteristic exotic flavor. Creamy, fragrant and slightly sweet, it brings richness and depth to any recipe in which it is used. Suffice it to say that having a can of coconut milk in your cupboard is essential.
Vegan and nutritious alternative
Coconut milk is produced by pressing coconut flesh and adding water. It contains on average 75% water, which makes it lower in calories than coconut cream. However, it remains a high-calorie product with around 188 kcal per 100 ml, mainly due to its high fat content. This richness in fat gives it its characteristic creaminess. Rich in lipids, particularly saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, coconut milk is a source of energy for the body. In addition, its dietary fiber content promotes digestive health, while its vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, potassium and calcium, strengthen the immune system and help maintain bone health. Like all plant-based milks, coconut milk is ideal for people with lactose intolerance or following a vegan diet.
Gourmet desserts
Its versatility makes it a valuable ingredient in cuisines around the world, especially in sweet recipes. It can be used to thicken and enrich sauces as well as to give lightness and tenderness to desserts. Its natural sweetness pairs perfectly with a variety of flavors, from tropical fruits like mango and pineapple to spices like cardamom and cinnamon.
