Smoked trout or smoked salmon? Which one to prefer at Christmas?

What about fish contamination?

Wild trout is protected and prohibited for sale, a downside for people fond of wild fish. However, according to Allo Docteurs, this is good news, because farmed salmon and trout are less exposed to heavy metals (heavy contaminants, such as PCBs and dioxins) than wild fish. Tests carried out by the magazine 60 Millions de consommateurs in 2022 showed that, out of 30 products analyzed, only mercury had been found in trace amounts, slightly more in trout than in farmed salmon.

Omega-3s more present in one than in the other

Omega-3 helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, affects memory and the proper functioning of the retina.
Fish rich in omega-3 are the fattest fish, such as trout and salmon, but which contains the most? There would be on average 1.4 g of omega-3 per 100 g of smoked salmon compared to 0.9 g of omega-3 per 100 g of smoked trout. Smoked salmon is therefore more nutritionally interesting.

Dyes to avoid?

The color of salmon trout and farmed salmon comes from a coloring added to the pellets used to feed them. Respectively naturally white and gray, they become pink-orange. This color is intended to imitate the color of wild salmon. The flesh of trout absorbs up to 2.5 times more coloring than that of farmed salmon. It would not be bad for your health, but to be on the safe side, do not hesitate to head towards a white trout.

Trout roe or salmon roe?

While smoked salmon seems to have more benefits than smoked trout, there are some merits to trout roe. More subtle, less salty and crunchier, they differ from larger salmon roe, which burst like bubble tea bubbles. It’s up to you to choose your fish eggs according to your preferences and those of your guests.
